China/South Korea, May 2002

The class of 2002 traveled to China and South Korea. We spent two weeks in highly interactive sessions with business managers, government officials, professors, other program’s EMBA students and Americans working in China and South Korea. During the first week, we first visited Shanghai, the financial capital of China, where we were hosted by the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Fudan University, Alcoa, Volkswagen, and the Flying Dragon Textile Mill. On Friday, we traveled to Beijing for a weekend in this spectacular city and area. During this time, we visited Tianamen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Place and the Great Wall. We also met with senior representatives from the Chinese government organization responsible for its participation in the World Trade Organization.

During the second week, we traveled to Seoul, South Korea, an economy that has developed rapidly. In South Korea, several important institutions and companies including the Korean Stock Exchange, Samsung, Yonsei University, Hyundai and BorgWarner hosted us. One of the highlights while in Korea was watching on a big screen TV a world cup game between France and Senegal in a German pub in Seoul, Korea along with a dozen other nationalities. Who said that TV isn’t educational?

During these two weeks, class teams were responsible for exploring the cultural, economic, administrative and geographic issues that influence the decision about making new or expanding existing investments in these two economies. On our last day, the teams presented their findings and explained their global implications
