Vietnam / China - 2008
Plans for the Class of 2008 international residency are already well underway. The Class of 2008 will focus on Asia, and it is anticipated that trip will include visits to Vietnam as well as Hong Kong and mainland China.
Vietnam borders the People's Republic of China to the north, Laos to the northwest and Cambodia to the southwest. On the country's vast east coast lies the South China Sea. With a population of approximately 85 million, Vietnam is one of the most densely populated nations in Southeast Asia. The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies; according to government figures GDP growth was 8.17% in 2006, the second fastest growth rate among all countries in East and Southeast Asia.
A special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong maintains a highly capitalist economy built on a policy of free market, low taxation and government non-intervention. It is an important center for international finance and trade, with the greatest concentration of corporate headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region. In terms of gross domestic product per capita and gross metropolitan product, Hong Kong is the wealthiest urban centre in the People's Republic of China.
With over 1.31 billion people, China is the most populous country in the world. At over 9.5 million km² (3.7 million square miles), it is the world's third or fourth largest country in terms of land-and-sea area. Due to its vast population, its rapidly growing economy, its large research and development investments, and other capabilities, China is often considered by commentators as an emerging superpower. China is currently the world's fourth largest economy, the second largest in terms of purchasing power parity, and the third largest exporter and importer.
